Position Opening: Assistant to the Director

 Description:

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site (TCNHS) is now hiring for a new entry-level position that will be full time, reporting directly to the Executive Director. The opening is an ideal opportunity for a college graduate with excellent written and verbal communication skills who is looking to enter the museum field. The new hire will receive extensive on-the-job training in a fast paced environment, joining an excellent team of museum professionals. The TCNHS is a rapidly growing, entrepreneurial organization that offers ample opportunity to learn, grow, and take on more responsibilities over time. The position is open immediately.

 Essential Functions and Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Serve as the “right hand” for the Executive Director, taking responsibility for her to-do list and executing tasks such as conversing with donors, setting up meetings, returning phone calls, reminding her of deadlines and appointments, etc.
  • Writing a wide variety of letters and reports for the Executive Director, including acknowledgement letters, fundraising letters and reports to the board of trustees.
  • Drafting all manner of marketing materials including the members’ newsletter, email blasts, website updates, flyers, brochure text, etc.
  • Writing grant applications and creating other fundraising materials including personalized solicitations and giving reports.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate must be a graduate of a four-year college degree program and have excellent writing and interpersonal skills, a desire to learn and enter the museum field, and a passion for the TCNHS’s mission. He or she will be the utmost professional, collaborative and creative in his or her approach, problem solving and relationship building, and will contribute to the positive team spirit. The successful candidate will have a cheerful and positive outlook, the ability to juggle many projects at once, and the energy to enjoy an environment with many changes and rapid growth.

Full time, salary DOE.

Shaker Museum Internship

The Shaker Museum|Mount Lebanon is currently hiring for part-time interns to be the public face of the Museum and to provide tours at the North Family, part of Mount Lebanon Shaker Village, a National Historic Landmark in New Lebanon, NY. During the summer and fall season, interns are needed to be on site during open hours, lead tours, provide information and operate the museum store. The position offers an opportunity to gain practical work experience in a field of study while sharing the Shaker story with visitors.

Responsibilities:
-Greet and welcome visitors as they arrive
-Lead daily tours of the North Family historic site to visitors
-Articulate the mission of the Shaker Museum|Mount Lebanon
-Encourage return visits through promoting memberships, programs and events
-Open, operate and close the museum store, cleaning as needed
-Monitor exhibition spaces and historic grounds
-Interns must be comfortable with public speaking and able to convey the story of the Shakers with accuracy and enthusiasm

Qualifications:
-Excellent communication and people skills

-Background or interest in history, religious history, art history, and/or historic preservation
-Experience in public presentations, historical interpretation, or related activities
-Bachelor’s degree preferred

Hours and Benefits:
Position begins June 19th and ends October 12th. Paid training will be held the week prior to opening. The position is part-time, 24 hours per week, Friday – Monday, 10am – 4pm, with the possibility of additional time to assist with special events. Interns must be available all four days for the entirety of the season. $10/hour.

In 2004, the Shaker Museum|Mount Lebanon became the owner and steward of the North Family site at Mount Lebanon Shaker Village – consisting of 10 remaining Shaker buildings on 30 acres, part of the Mount Lebanon Shaker Society National Historic Landmark. Mount Lebanon was America’s largest and leading Shaker community from 1787 to 1947. The Artistic Journey of Yasuo Kuniyoshi

Yasuo Kuniyoshi: Bearing the Weight

Co-curator Tom Wolf,  will give an opening talk on April 10, 2015.

 The Artistic Journey of Yasuo Kuniyoshi,  looks at the evolution of the artist’s work, and is the first comprehensive exhibition about the artist in the U.S. since 1948. It remains on view at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. through August 30, 2015.

audiobooks after World War II, but the two formats soon diverged in terms of
reading strategies. Mills will discuss the cultural imperative
for aural speed reading that drove early time-stretching innovations in the
magnetic tape era, allowing playback rate to be changed without affecting pitch.
