Chinese Ensemble Policy
Chinese Ensemble is a crucial part of music training. This class is required for all Chinese music instrument major every semester. The grading system will be including attendance, material preparation, in class participation, and concert performances. This class will be either 1 or 0 credit depending on individual student’s needs. Maestro holds the right to change the ensemble class plan.
Here is the list of things you should bring to Bard with you:
- All black (long) dress or suit or Tuxedo (Please see below for concert dress code 1 and 2)
- White shirt and Black shirt
- Black dress shoes (no open toe)
- Folding stands
- Stand light
- Tuner and Metronome
- Musician earplugs (important!)
- Extra instrument materials (nails, strings… etc.)
- Rehair the bow before you come if needed
Attendance Policy
Everyone will start your grade with “A”. When you miss one rehearsal unexpectedly (unexcused), your grade will drop down one letter. Therefore, if you have two unexcused absences, you will automatically fail the ensemble. If you are late more than 3 times, your grade will drop down one letter as well. All US-China Music Institute students are required to enroll in the ensemble every semester. If you fail this ensemble class, you will not be able to graduate on time. Your Chinese ensemble grades will also affect your scholarship.
THE ABSENCE REQUEST FORM
Absence Request Form is available online at:
US-ChinaMusic Institute Absence Request Form
An Absence Request Form must be submitted and approved by the Conservatory at least three days before your absence date and before accepting any outside commitments. If you do not send in your absence request form three days in advance before the class you are planning on missing, then we will not accept your absence request. Hence, your absence will be an unexcused absence. However, if your absence request is a last minute emergency, then we will deal with it case by case. If your request is last minute, you must call and email Hsiao-Fang Lin at 415-613-2489 and [email protected]. Wechat is not an official contact channel, please always use email for official requests.
ABSENCES FOR PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Any absence for outside professional activities (even very brief periods of time, e.g., auditions, performances, etc.) will only be deemed an excused absence upon Conservatory approval, following submission of the completed Absence Request Form as stated above. We will do our very best to respond to requests as quickly as possible.
