{"id":8172,"date":"2013-05-17T09:47:13","date_gmt":"2013-05-17T13:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.multiplier-effect.org\/?p=8172"},"modified":"2013-05-17T09:49:58","modified_gmt":"2013-05-17T13:49:58","slug":"hyman-minsky-and-the-employer-of-last-resort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/multiplier-effect\/hyman-minsky-and-the-employer-of-last-resort\/","title":{"rendered":"Hyman Minsky and the Employer of Last Resort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned Hyman Minsky\u2019s new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ending-Poverty-Jobs-Not-Welfare\/dp\/1936192314\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1364998534&amp;sr=1-2\"><em>Ending Poverty: Jobs, Not Welfare<\/em><\/a> (there is also a Kindle version).\u00a0 Take a look at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/multiplier-effect\/files\/2013\/05\/cover.pdf\">cover<\/a> \u2013 Minsky looking like a bit of a rougue!<\/p>\n<p>I thought you might enjoy my powerpoint presentation, given at the Levy-Ford annual Minsky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.levyinstitute.org\/news\/?event=45\">conference<\/a> in NYC in mid-April. It summarizes some of the main arguments of the book. However, you really need the book \u2013 it is brilliant, and a good antidote to all the silly arguments made by economists that we \u201cneed\u201d to keep tens of millions of Americans unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>As Keynes put it:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Conservative belief that there is some law of nature which prevents men from being employed, that it is \u2018rash\u2019 to employ men, and that it is financially \u2018sound\u2019 to maintain a tenth of the population in idleness is crazily improbable \u2013 the sort of thing which no man could believe who had not had his head fuddled with nonsense for years and years\u2026.\u201d (J.
