{"id":500,"date":"2010-08-01T10:12:56","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T14:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.multiplier-effect.org\/?p=500"},"modified":"2010-08-03T11:50:54","modified_gmt":"2010-08-03T15:50:54","slug":"another-call-for-social-sector-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/multiplier-effect\/another-call-for-social-sector-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Another call for social-sector jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/01\/business\/01view.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=robert%20shiller&amp;st=cse\">New York Times column,<\/a> Yale&#8217;s Robert Shiller calls for a federal effort to battle unemployment by creating precisely the kind of socially beneficial jobs that some Levy Institute scholars have been recommending:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why not use government policy to directly create jobs \u2014 labor-intensive service jobs in fields like education, public health and safety, urban infrastructure maintenance, youth programs, elder care, conservation, arts and letters, and scientific research?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For deficit hawks, Shiller notes that the cost would be modest:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Big new programs to create jobs need not be expensive. Suppose the cost of hiring a single employee were as high as $30,000 a year, several times typical AmeriCorps living allowances. Hiring a million people would cost $30 billion a year.
