Watch:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2016-06-07\/the-argument-against-basic-income\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13320\" src=\"http:\/\/multiplier-effect.org\/files\/2016\/06\/Thcerneva-Weisenthal_Basic-Income-v-Job-Guarantee.png\" alt=\"Thcerneva Weisenthal_Basic Income v Job Guarantee\" width=\"499\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/multiplier-effect\/files\/2016\/06\/Thcerneva-Weisenthal_Basic-Income-v-Job-Guarantee.png 927w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/multiplier-effect\/files\/2016\/06\/Thcerneva-Weisenthal_Basic-Income-v-Job-Guarantee-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tcherneva\u00a0has written about the UBI versus Job Guarantee debate, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/media.wix.com\/ugd\/f4c1a3_a41dc8241e4e482591b513791ef17a2e.pdf\">this contribution<\/a> (pdf) to a\u00a0special issue\u00a0of the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/view\/j\/bis.2013.7.issue-2\/issue-files\/bis.2013.7.issue-2.xml\"><em>Basic Income Studies<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(paywall).<\/p>\n<p>She also spoke about this last November at a roundtable convened by <em>Dissent<\/em> magazine:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"427\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MMshp0-odH0?start=1925\" frameborder=\"0\" 0=\"allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the macroeconomics, Ezra Klein\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/6\/1\/11827024\/universal-basic-income\">gets to the heart<\/a> of what I think is one of the most pressing <em>ethical<\/em> questions with respect to basic income policies (this was a response to Eduardo Porter&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/01\/business\/economy\/universal-basic-income-poverty.html\">column<\/a> on the issue):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Work, [Porter] writes, &#8220;is not just what people do for a living. It is a source of status. It organizes people\u2019s lives. It offers an opportunity for progress. None of this can be replaced by a check.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later, he\u00a0says that &#8220;in this world &#8230; where work remains an important social, psychological and economic anchor, there are better tools to help than giving every American a monthly check.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Notice what he did there. &#8220;In this world.&#8221; So long as any discussion of a universal basic income is predicated on those three words, then I agree: It&#8217;s a bad idea. But the whole argument over a UBI, as I see it, is about the legitimacy of those three words. A UBI is the kind of radical policy that asks whether we actually need to live in this world, or whether there are better worlds on offer, if only we have the political and cultural courage to find them.<\/p>\n<p>Does work \u2014 as currently conceived \u2014 have to be our primary source of status? Should it organize our lives?
