{"id":2014,"date":"2018-11-26T11:09:22","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T15:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/?p=2014"},"modified":"2018-11-26T11:09:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T15:09:51","slug":"educating-women-and-girls-why-its-a-solution-to-combat-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/2018\/11\/26\/educating-women-and-girls-why-its-a-solution-to-combat-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Educating Women and Girls: Why It&#8217;s a Solution to Combat Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paul Hawken, noted American environmentalist, entrepreneur, activist, and author, has just released his latest book:\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/the-book\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2015\" style=\"width: 317px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.19.46.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2015\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.19.46.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Hawken | Project Drawdown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In <em>Drawdown<\/em>, Hawken argues that one of the most effective solutions to<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0climate change is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/solutions\/women-and-girls\/educating-girls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">educating women and girls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Educating women and girls provides a foundation for vibrant lives. Education empowers women and girls to be more effective and resilient stewards of food, soil, trees, and water, even as nature\u2019s cycles change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Africa and the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, there&#8217;s been a lot of progress on student enrollment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/solutions\/women-and-girls\/educating-girls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kenya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has made significant gains in education, with more than 80 percent of all boys and girls currently enrolled in primary schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But according to even the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2017\/10\/17\/i-wont-be-doctor-and-one-day-youll-be-sick\/girls-access-education-afghanistan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">optimistic statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span>the proportion of Afghan girls who are in school has never gone much above 50 percent.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Relying on Afghan government data from 2010-2011, UNICEF found that 66 percent of Afghan girls of lower secondary school age\u201412 to 15 years old\u2014are out of school, compared to 40 percent of boys that age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Indeed, economic, cultural, and safety-related barriers continue to impede 62 million girls around the world from realizing their right to education. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key strategies to change that include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">making school affordable;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">helping girls overcome health barriers;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reducing the time and distance to get to school; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">making schools more girl friendly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organizations are working to change this narrative within the MENA region. One such organization, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codetoinspire.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Code to Inspire (CTI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the first coding academy for girls in Herat, Afghanistan. Founded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadthechange.bard.edu\/podcast\/author\/fereshteh-forough-code-to-inspire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fereshteh Forough <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2015, CTI has given more than 150 female students the skills and confidence to code, build apps, and generate work opportunities for themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2016\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-03-18.19.46.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2016\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-03-18.19.46-300x202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Code to Inspire | Students 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Code to Inspire uses technology education and outreach to provide Afghan women with leverage in their fight for social, political, and economic equality. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As role models for other young Afghan women, CTI graduates demonstrate that women are capable of adding value to their communities far beyond simple housework or early marriage. Through empowerment, CTI builds skills and infrastructure for women to compete in the global tech market, empowering them financially and socially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Blossom Hill Foundation is another organization that&#8217;s working to empower girls from the MENA region through education.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blossomhill-foundation.org\/about-us.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blossom Hill Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2009 by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blossomhill-foundation.org\/board-of-directors.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shiva Sarram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a former child of war from Iran, who fled Tehran in the early 1980s with her family and came to America where Shiva and Blossom Hill&#8217;s Board of Directors are committed to <\/span><b>investing in social entrepreneurs to help children affected by conflict in the Middle East thrive.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To date, Blossom Hill has invested over $933,000 into fellows projects that in turn have impacted 56,000 war-affected children in ten countries. Fellows have engaged and created impactful projects that are foundational in education and have reached many women and girls across MENA and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2017\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.20.00.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2017\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.20.00-300x234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.20.00-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Screenshot-2018-11-12-13.20.00.png 466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blossom Hill | 2018 Fellows<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To give refugee children an opportunity to learn, Blossom Hill fellow <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blossomhill-foundation.org\/aris-papadopoulos.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aris Papadopolous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is opening a STEM Center, which places STEM education at the heart of an early childhood education program. While this will give the youngest refugees an opportunity to learn science within Greece, it will also train unaccompanied minors as apprentices in the Center to inspire them to continue to pursue their education and possibly become teachers themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blossom Hill fellow, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blossomhill-foundation.org\/lexi-shereshewsky.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lexi Shereshewsky,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is opening an Early Childhood Center in Jordan, to support early academic and behavioral needs of young refugee and other vulnerable children through alternative education activities inspired by Montessori methods. The project will additionally benefit parents of young children through workshops and other awareness sessions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we navigate the landscape to create a more sustainable and low carbon future, it becomes apparent how much more globally we have to think and be aware for every corner, voice, and perspective of our global community.
