Making sustainable decisions can cut their costs, as well improve human health and attract investors and customers.<\/p>\n<p>Music creation is one category with a lot of potential.<\/p>\n<p>This summer I sat down with Kickstarter\u2019s Director of music, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/blog\/introducing-kickstarters-new-director-of-music-meredith-graves\">Meredith Graves<\/a>, to discuss the environmental impact of fulfilling music projects. We found that, while there is discussion about sustainability in the music space, there\u2019s not a one-stop convenient resource outlining the environmental impact of various music formats\u2013specifically vinyl, cassette, CD, and digital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile in a long-term sense, we may find our most sustainable option is something akin to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/01\/09\/462289635\/bones-and-grooves-weird-secret-history-of-soviet-x-ray-music\">infamous Soviet X-Ray records<\/a> (at least that\u2019s what I\u2019m hoping for) or cassette casings 3D-printed with recyclable material, those solutions are unlikely to come about so long as we avoid discussing the pros and cons of existing formats,\u201d Graves says. \u201cIf we\u2019re looking to music as an avenue to make a better world, we should always start with the planet itself!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Together, we collaborated on an illustrated resource for music creators, for those who use Kickstarter, and beyond (<a href=\"https:\/\/d3mlfyygrfdi2i.cloudfront.net\/PDF_Infographic-Music-Sustainability_Master.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here to download the PDF<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Music-Sustainability2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2001\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Music-Sustainability2-89x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"1749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Music-Sustainability2-89x300.jpg 89w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/11\/Music-Sustainability2.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: Kickstarter<\/p>\n<p>While these are not comprehensive guidelines, they <em>are<\/em> an introduction to learning about and discussing the environmental impact of music fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p>Here are few other sustainable music resources Meredith and I recommend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agreenerfestival.com\/initiatives\/\">A Greener Festival<\/a>\u00a0is a place to share some of the best green initiatives used at festivals around the world.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventisostenibili.it\/sites\/default\/files\/MusicFestivalsGuidebook.pdf\">The Sustainable Music Festival: Strategic Guide<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is a guidebook for festival organizers, artists, fans, and public authorities.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/flyranch.burningman.org\/\">Fly Ranch<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journal.burningman.org\/2018\/03\/black-rock-city\/leaving-no-trace\/burning-mans-2018-environmental-check-up\/\">Burning Man<\/a>\u2019s 3,800 acre parcel in northern Nevada.
