{"id":1784,"date":"2018-04-25T10:34:45","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T14:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/?p=1784"},"modified":"2018-04-25T17:54:54","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T21:54:54","slug":"bard-mba-teams-win-and-place-in-international-sustainability-competitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/2018\/04\/25\/bard-mba-teams-win-and-place-in-international-sustainability-competitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Bard MBA Teams Win and Place in International Sustainability Competitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bard MBA students made productive use of the spring, reaching the finals in three different international sustainable business competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On April 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, team \u201cLead the Change\u201d earned silver at the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/responsiblebusiness.haas.berkeley.edu\/events\/patagonia-2018.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patagonia\/Berkeley Haas competition<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on the UC Berekely campus. \u00a0Five MBA students\u2014Cory Skuldt, Alistair Hall, Savannah Parsons, Lindsey Strange, and Sam Brundrett\u2014pitched Patagonia executives on how the innovative clothing company could become carbon neutral by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/PatagoniaWin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1789\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/PatagoniaWin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"732\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/PatagoniaWin.jpg 732w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/PatagoniaWin-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The proposal was long on chutzpah, recommending that Patagonia cap production of new clothing by 2025 &#8212; while continuing to grow revenue and serve the needs of additional customers. The students detailed strategies such as leasing, expanded resale and repair, and production from recycled fibers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAmong all the teams competing, we were uniquely prepared to demand an uncompromising level of climate responsibility and identify the business opportunity in doing so&#8221;, said Cory Skuldt, who will be graduating next month. \u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m so grateful for this experience at the close of my MBA.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lead the Change defeated MIT, Yale, NYU, the Universities of Michigan and Pennsylvania and three other finalists, from an original field of over one-hundred submissions, earning a trip to Patagonia Headquarters in Ventura California in June. There, along with the teams from UVA and third place Yale they will execute a deep dive into their business model with Patagonia employees\u2014along with catching some rad surfing. They will also receive a cash prize of $5000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just a week earlier, the Bard team \u201cEnlightened Grain\u201d travelled to Oakland, California as one of five finalists in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netimpact.org\/programs\/food-solutions-2018\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Net Impact Food Solutions Challenge.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0The team included Samuel Leavitt and Sarah Hutcherson, with Lindsey Strange \u00a0in absentia as she competed the next week in person with the Patagonia crew. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/EnlightenedGrain.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1788\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/EnlightenedGrain.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/EnlightenedGrain.png 320w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/EnlightenedGrain-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>Enlightened Grain proposed a business based on using brewery grain to make a beer-inspired, \u00a0highly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nutritious and tasty granola. Currently, spent grain either goes to the landfill or for animal feed but this so-called waste is chalk full of fiber and protein, making it an incredible baking ingredient on which to build a business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Enlightened Grain team had already won a spot as one of five finalists from an international field of one hundred thirty, along with UC Berkeley, Iowa State, Ashoka University and a professional team from Cameroon. The Oakland trip enabled the team to work collaboratively with the other teams and with experienced mentors to refine their business ideas. Enlightened Grain is now producing a final pitch video. Based in part on how the idea has progressed since the mentoring in Oakland, final winners will be chosen from among the five. The first prize? Five thousand dollars to help develop the Enlightened Grain concept into a real business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;The accelerator challenged us to think big and solve the most pressing barriers to our business idea right away,&#8221; said Sarah. &#8220;Sam, Lindsey and I are energized to bring our idea to life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In one more competition, three separate Bard student teams beat out close to five hundred entries worldwide to become finalists, with two earning category winning spots, in the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/aim2flourish.com\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aim2Flourish<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">competition sponsored by Case Western University. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aim2Flourish highlights businesses around the world that are supporting the UN\u2019s seventeen<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.undp.org\/content\/undp\/en\/home\/sustainable-development-goals.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Student teams in Professor Kristina Kohl\u2019s Employees and Organizations class identified and researched businesses doing good work advancing the SDG\u2019s. They then wrote up and submitted their cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/Aim2Flourish.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1787\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/Aim2Flourish.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/Aim2Flourish.png 303w, https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/mba\/files\/2018\/04\/Aim2Flourish-300x112.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a>Luke Olson, Martin Freeman, Jesse Cutaia and Sam Levine focused a spotlight on<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/aim2flourish.com\/innovations\/apds-is-changing-corrections-for-good?utm_source=AIM2Flourish&amp;utm_campaign=186d03bbd0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_07&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_f68a8c6d0f-186d03bbd0-245070481&amp;mc_cid=186d03bbd0&amp;mc_eid=9c50a9c2ff\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Prison Data Systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u00a0By creating a technology platform for access to educational material, APDS is helping to build a more humane and effective prison system. \u00a0This case won the competition supporting SDG#16 \u201cPeace Justice and Strong Institutions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alistair Hall, Sven Thiessen and Amy Campbell submitted a case focused on<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/aim2flourish.com\/innovations\/helping-the-people-of-yonkers-thrive?utm_source=AIM2Flourish&amp;utm_campaign=186d03bbd0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_07&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_f68a8c6d0f-186d03bbd0-245070481&amp;mc_cid=186d03bbd0&amp;mc_eid=9c50a9c2ff\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greyston Bakery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a Yonkers-based business that hires hard-to-employ, often recently incarcerated workers to make, among other things, brownies for Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s. \u00a0The Greyston case was selected as the winner for SDG#17 \u201cPartnerships to Achieve the Goals\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally Reagan Richmond, Cindy Wasser, and Stephen Williams\u2019s case presented<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/aim2flourish.com\/innovations\/the-burger-that-could-change-the-world\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impossible Foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a company that provides plant-based alternatives to animal products that taste as delicious as the real thing but have less environmental impact than factory farmed food. Impossible Foods was selected as a finalist in several of the SDG categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThrough their AIM2Flourish stories, our students are uplifting \u00a0amazing businesses that embrace innovative, scalable, and transformative solutions creating a net positive impact\u201d, said Professor Kohl. \u201cThese stories set a great example for us all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The businesses featured as finalists and winners in the Aim2Flourish completion receive global recognition that can help advance their missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBard MBA students and graduates are committed to reinventing business to solve social and environmental challenges, while treating workers, communities and suppliers with justice and respect\u201d, said MBA Director Dr. Eban Goodstein. \u201cSuccesses in these national competitions are terrific proving grounds for our students\u2019 skills and ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About the Bard MBA in Sustainability<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Bard MBA in Sustainability educates leaders to grow mission-driven businesses and nonprofits, and to transform existing organizations to focus on social and environmental purpose.
