Three alumni from Bard\u2019s Graduate Programs in Sustainability have recently announced plans to campaign for elected office.<\/p>\n<p>Jess King, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bard.edu\/mba\">MBA<\/a> \u201816, is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for US Congress from her life-long home in the Lancaster PA area. Jess has served as Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/assetspa.org\/\">ASSETS<\/a> since 2010, an innovative community economic development organization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/JessKingCongress.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9568 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/JessKingCongress.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/jesskingforcongress.com\/\">announcing<\/a> her run, Jess said: \u201cIt\u2019s up to us&#8211;everyday Americans&#8211;to breathe new life into our democracy. I\u2019m a working mother who has devoted my career to supporting small business owners seeking a shot at the American dream. But it hasn\u2019t been enough. The cards are stacked against working families. Our country is too divided, and Washington isn\u2019t helping. America should be for all of us.\u201d \u00a0Jess brought on Juzer Rangoonwala, a fellow Bard MBA alum and Pennsylvania resident, to serve as her campaign&#8217;s Treasurer. Jess&#8217;s candidacy is also featured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpbj.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20170627\/CPBJ01\/170629829\/assets-executive-director-taking-leave-to-run-for-office&amp;template=mobileart\">Central Penn Business Journal<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Erycka Montoya, a student in CEP \u201811, is running for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voteeryckamontoya.com\/\">New York City Council District 21 in Queens<\/a>. Erycka reports she is \u201cexcited and looking forward to the opportunity to represent the district I grew up in and figure out how to make NYC a place that native New Yorkers can afford to stay in and raise their families.\u00a0 Feeling pushed out of my own city is a big part of what has compelled me to step up and take a chance.\u201d Montoya has spent her years since CEP working to promote community economic development in New York City.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/EryckaMontoyaOffice.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9570 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/EryckaMontoyaOffice.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Danny Lapin, CEP \u201815, an Environmental Planner with Otsego County in New York, is running to represent his neighborhood in Oneonta on the Otsego County Board of Representatives. In his professional role he has been working across the aisle to facilitate sustainable economic development, protect the environment, and help communities plan for their future. He is running to help \u201cheal divisions within the Board and build new partnerships that will strengthen the County for years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/DannyLapinOffice.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9569 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/cepblog\/files\/2017\/07\/DannyLapinOffice.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lapin says that, &#8220;My experience at the Bard College <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bard.edu\/cep\">Center for Environmental Policy<\/a> gave me the skills I need to communicate policy in a nonpartisan, scientific way. As a professional and now, as a candidate, effective communication skills are indispensable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The current political climate has heightened American\u2019s engagement, especially among young people.
