{"id":3463,"date":"2023-04-04T12:16:16","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T16:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/arthistory\/?p=3463"},"modified":"2023-04-04T12:16:22","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T16:16:22","slug":"alex-kitnick-speaks-at-the-institute-for-contemporary-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bard.edu\/arthistory\/?p=3463","title":{"rendered":"Alex Kitnick speaks at the Institute for Contemporary Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"header-left\" data-equalizer-watch=\"header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"header-right\" data-equalizer-watch=\"header\">\n<nav class=\"header-right-bottom\">\n<div class=\"show-for-large\">\n<p><strong>MCLUHAN LECTURES: CHIOKE I\u2019ANSON AND ALEX KITNICK ON MARSHALL MCLUHAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/nav>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hero-meta on-display\">\n<div class=\"event-date-time-meta event-single \" data-equalizer-watch=\"card-date\">\n<p class=\"event-meta-date\">Friday, Apr 14, 6:00 PM\u20138:00 PM<\/p>\n<p>If the title of artist Rafael Domenech\u2019s experimental publishing pavilion on the ICA\u2019s third floor,\u00a0<em>The Medium is the Massage<\/em>, seems familiar, that\u2019s because it\u2019s borrowed from a highly influential 1967 book by trailblazing media theorist Marshall McLuhan.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone curious about the theoretical ghost behind the artwork, on Friday, April 14, at 6 pm, ICA Director of Community Media Chioke l\u2019Anson and art historian Alex Kitnick will come together to draw McLuhan\u2019s vital thinking out into fuller and brighter view.<\/p>\n<p>In an evening of conversation, Chioke and Alex will guide us into McLuhan\u2019s field-defining world of ideas, discussing, for instance, his famous notion that \u201cthe medium is the message,\u201d and explaining how that \u201cmessage\u201d turned into a \u201cmassage.\u201d Situating his arguments within the broader context of communication theory, they\u2019ll show us how McLuhan\u2019s writings can be used to understand the modern media landscape. Along the way, they\u2019ll elaborate on McLuhan\u2019s specific and unusual critical voice, one developed to try to account for changing modes of looking and reading, and one that argued that artists can play a part in the shaping of the world to come\u2014and expand on why these notions still urgently matter today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location: True Farr Luck Gallery, third floor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Speakers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chioke I\u2019Anson<\/strong>\u00a0is Director of Community Media at the VPM+ICA Community Media Center. He is formerly Assistant Professor of African American Studies at VCU and currently a voice of underwriting at NPR. Chioke has a PhD in philosophy from the University of South Florida and has been heard on podcasts such as\u00a0<em>Wait Wait Don\u2019t Tell Me<\/em>,<em>\u00a0Everything is Alive<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Love + Radio<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The 11th<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Kitnick<\/strong>\u00a0teaches art history and criticism at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and is a frequent contributor to publications including\u00a0<em>4Columns<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Artforum<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>October<\/em>.
