VFPostcardFrontThe Center for Civic Engagement is pleased to announce the date of the 2013 Volunteer Fair for September 23rd, 2013.

(RED HOOK, NY) – Denizens of Red Hook will have a chance to get an up close and personal look at area non-profit organizations during the third annual Volunteer Fair from5 to 7 p.m. Monday, September 23, at Bard College in the Multi-Purpose Room of Bertelsmann Campus Center.

“We continue to be amazed by the hundreds of people who come out to get involved,” said Erin Cannan, Associate Director for Bard Center for Civic Engagement. “What an opportunity for potential volunteers, ranging from 8th graders to Bard college students to senior citizens, seeking volunteer opportunities. The Fair offers a huge variety of local resources and reminds us of how important it is to support our local agencies.”

Participating Organizations

Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley - To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.

American Red Cross Preparedness Department - The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Baden-Powell Service Association - The 91st Sojourners are a co-ed, inclusive and traditional scouting group serving the mid-Hudson Valley. Based in Kingston, NY, the 91st Sojourners are a part of the Baden-Powell Service Association-U.S.

Bard SolarList - Educate homeowners in America about how they can benefit from solar energy. We seek to sign up Bard and high school students for the SolarBowl – as many as possible. Contest starts 10/1 and runs six weeks. Also, looking for ongoing participation beyond SolarBowl, including SolarList Fellows and team members.

The Big Read - The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. It supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences.

Canine Link - Canine Link is a 501 (c3) not-for-profit therapy dog organization based in New York’s Hudson Valley. We train and certify therapy dog teams (handler and dog) and provide therapy dog services to individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other facilities.

Center for Creative Education – The Center for Creative Education seeks to create a better world by nurturing and empowering youth and community through the arts.

Columbia County Habitat for Humanity & ReStore - An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Columbia County Habitat was founded in 1993 to build decent , affordable housing for working families who live in substandard housing. We also build a sense of community by engaging hundreds of volunteers, mobilizing resources and advocating on behalf of neighbors.

The Community at Brookmeade - The Community at Brookmeade is a senior living community consisting of The Baptist Home (Skilled Nursing/Rehab), The Terraces (Assisted Living) and Arbor Ridge (Independent Retirement Living) located in Rhinebeck, NY.

Dutchess County Community Action – The mission of the Dutchess County Community Action Program is to partner with individuals and families to eliminate poverty and identify the resources and opportunities available to them to enhance their self reliance.

Dutchess County Habitat for Humanity - Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County is committed to making affordable housing a matter of conscious and action by partnering with hard-working, local families and volunteers. We seek to restore a sense of community with the common goal of strong neighborhoods and dignity through homeownership.

Fidelis Care - Fidelis Care is the New York State Catholic Health Plan that offers New York State-sponsored health programs to children and adults in 59 counties Statewide. The mission of Fidelis Care is to ensure that every resident, regardless of income, age, religion, gender, or ethnic background, has access to quality health care, provided with dignity and respect. The mission of Fidelis Care is to ensure that every resident, regardless of income, age, religion, gender, or ethnic background, has access to quality health care, provided with dignity and respect.

Frederick W. Vanderbilt Garden Association – The mission of the Frederick W. Vanderbilt Association is to Rehabilitate and maintain the formal gardens at the Vanderbilt National Historic Site to the landscape defined by the National Park Service.

Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson - Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. They are looking for volunteers to provide leadership experience for girls.

Hospice Inc. - Hospice Inc. affirms the cycle of life by enhancing the quality of living for those at the end of life. They are looking for volunteers to work in their office and to assist in patient and family visiting.

Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center - As a safe, supportive environment, the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center provides services, professional resources, and programs that unite the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community across lines of age, race, gender and economics. It will strengthen, support, and celebrate LGBTQ individuals, families, and groups in their efforts to achieve their fullest potential.

Hyde Park Central School District - The Hyde Park Central School District is seeking volunteers for its first year of AVID implementation in 9th grade. Avid stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination”. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Kerley Homestead Farm – A local farm and participant in the Red Hook Farmer’s Market, Kerley Homestead Farm is run by the Salvatico family and is glad to attend the Volunteer Fair.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

The Lisa Libraries - The Lisa Libraries donates new books to grass roots non profit organizations that serve underprivileged children. In the past year we have donated books for Hurricane Sandy relief in New York and New Jersey, prison visiting rooms where children visit incarcerated parents, Head Starts, after school centers and public housing community centers and many more. In 2012 and so far in 2013 we have donated over 40,000 new books for children in need.

Literacy Connections - Literacy Connections is committed to offering programs that will ensure a literate society. We recruit and train volunteers to provide no-cost student-centered tutoring for adults; we also provide programs and services for individuals and families that promote self-reliance and enrichment through literacy including teaching English to immigrants.

Make-A-Wish® Hudson Valley – We grant the wishes of kids with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns - Since its creation in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 members to more than 1,000 mayors from across the country. The coalition has more than 1.5 million grassroots supporters, making it the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country. Mayors Against Illegal Guns has united the nation’s mayors on a bi-partisan basis around these common goals: protecting communities by holding gun offenders accountable; demanding access to crime gun trace data that is critical to law enforcement efforts to combat gun trafficking; and working with legislators to fix weaknesses and loopholes in the law that make it far too easy for criminals and other dangerous people to get guns.

Micki Strawinski for Dutchess County Legislator - Mission is to be elected to represent District 20 of the Dutchess County Legislature. District 20 includes the Town of Red Hook, Village of Red Hook, Village of Tivoli, the hamlets of Barrytown, Annadale-on-Hudson (including Bard College) and Upper Red Hook.

NY State Sheep and Wool Festival - The NYS Sheep and Wool Festival hosts 30,000+ people annually in Rhinebeck’s fairgrounds for fiber arts workshops, livestock shows, fleece shows and sales and oodles of vendors from all over the USA. Always the 3rd full weekend in October, the festival is a core event supporting fiber production and fiber arts and craftmanship in the northeast. We divide the organizing up by venues (merchandising, competitions, livestock shows, vendors, 4H, etc) and anyone can volunteer with any area. The festival is produced by the Dutchess County Sheep and Wool Growers Association.

O+ Festival - The O+ Festival is a three-day, community-run celebration of music and the arts. O+ participating artists exchange their contributions for health care services from art-loving doctors, dentists, and other wellness providers at the O+ Clinic. In short, it’s a grassroots, band-aid solution to inaccessible healthcare for the creative community. By programming the festival’s art and music events in various, venues (bars, restaurants, storefronts, even offices) throughout one neighborhood, O+ supports and unites local businesses and residents, artists, musicians and doctors, strengthening the fabric of a community to make it stronger, more sustainable, and more vibrant.

Office of Senator Terry Gipson - Senator Terry Gipson is serving his first term representing the 41st Senate District, which is comprised of all of Dutchess County (except for the towns of Beekman and Pawling), and the Putnam county towns of Phillipstown, Kent, and Putnam Valley. He is the Ranking Member of the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Local Government, and sits on the Banks, Consumer Protection, Tourism, Transportation, and Veterans Committees.

PANDA 23 - Public Access Northern Dutchess Area, Inc. (PANDA) is a not-for-profit Public Access Station located in Tivoli NY. We are committed to providing local programming which will increase opporitunities for community expression on issuse and topics that affect the lives of community members. To this end, Panda believes that the local community will play an active role in determining and developing programming for public and government access. Our mission is to provide the community with the technology and equipment to produce their own programming.

Planned Parenthood - Our six medical centers, located throughout Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties, provide a wide range of comprehensive sexual health services to more than 40,000 people annually. We focus on prevention – the prevention of unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, cancer and other illnesses – and our medical staff works closely with clients to find affordable, safe and effective options.

Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club - As a part of the RTWBC there is a Bluebird Trail Committee who’s mission is to further the propagation of the NY State Bird, the Bluebird by monitoring and maintaining established Bluebird Trails and setting up new trails in Dutchess County.

Ramapo for Children - Through direct service youth programs and highly regarded training programs for adults, Ramapo for Children works on behalf of children who face obstacles to learning, enabling them to succeed in the classroom, at home, and in life.  At the heart of our work is the conviction that all children seek the same things: to learn, feel valued and experience success. Ramapo helps young people learn to align their behaviors with their aspirations.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County (RTDC) - The mission of Rebuilding Together Dutchess County (RTDC) is to bring volunteers and communities together to revitalize homes, assuring that qualified homeowners live independently in a warm, safe and dry environment.

Red Hook Community Garden/Earth to Table – The garden provides food for Rusty’s as well as other wellness diners and soup kitchens throughout Poughkeepsie and the county.

Red Hook Public Library - Red Hook Public Library is a place of ideas, creativity and imagination. Our mission is to provide innovative experiences that enrich the lives of Red Hook residents. We are dedicated to providing access to information that inspires curiosity and leads to new learning experiences for patrons of all ages.

Red Hook United Methodist Church - The church is seeking to expand our community outreach, increase awareness of our Food Pantry, and interest more volunteer participation.

Revista La Voz - La Voz is an award-winning free monthly magazine in Spanish that empowers its Spanish speaking readers through actionable information. Sponsored by Bard College, and thanks to our volunteers, we reach about 20,000 readers ervery month in Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Columbia counties.

The Rhinebeck Jewish Center - Our mission at the RJC is to promote and strengthen Jewish awareness, pride, and observance by providing educational, cultural, and social activities to the community regardless of prior or current background and affiliation. Aside from that, we are also here to help anyone who needs us, in any way we possibly can.

Rhinebeck Science Foundation - The Rhinebeck Science Foundation seeks to enhance the Rhinebeck Central School District’s curriculum for grades K-12. Working with teachers, administrators and the school board, we will create and fund programs that use hands-on learning and innovative teaching methods to help students explore their worlds and connect science, math, engineering and technology to their everyday lives.

Riverkeeper - Riverkeeper is a member-supported watchdog organization dedicated to defending the Hudson River and its tributaries and protecting the drinking water supply of nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents.

Rotary Club of Red Hook - To re-introduce ourselves to the community and inform them of our community accomplishments including our medical assistance program and education services and dog therapy program. Also inform the public of our international endeavors.

Rural & Migrant Ministry - Rural & Migrant Ministry is a non-profit non-denominational organization that nurtures leadership in rural New York through programs of Youth Empowerment.

Staatsburgh State Historic Site - The Staatsburgh State Historic Site preserves a Beaux-Arts mansion designed by McKim, Mead, and White and the home’s surrounding landscape in the hamlet of Staatsburg, Dutchess County, New York. The mansion is considered a fine example of the great estates built during the Gilded Age.

Somos la Llave del Futuro - Somos la Llave del Futuro (We are the key to the future) is a not for profit organization based in Dutchess County that seeks to build leadership in the Latino immigrant communities of the Hudson Valley and Catskill regions.

Sustainable Hudson Valley - We believe in addressing the climate crisis, the most important foundation is not politics or policy but bringing people together to support more concerted action among the majority that is already concerned. We believe that the flashpoints for rapid, positive change are well led communities, institutions and networks. We believe that solutions are custom-built at the local level, but communities can inspire and guide each other to build a powerful movement. We believe creativity and spirit are the essential ingredients.

Tivoli Free Library - The Tivoli Free Library is dedicated to providing free access to all members of the community to materials, programs, and services that enrich, educate, entertain, and encourage life long learning.

UlsterCorps - UlsterCorps is a countywide resource dedicated to fostering a culture of volunteerism, collaboration and service. Our mission is to increase the use of volunteers, facilitate successful and effective volunteer placements, and build collaborations among nonprofit organizations and with businesses interested in community involvement throughout Ulster County.

Ulster County SPCA - The UCSPCA is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by providing temporary shelter and finding adoptive homes for homeless, abused and neglected animals; conducting cruelty investigations; eliminating the crisis of homeless animals by providing low-cost spay/neuter services for cats and by spaying or neutering all animals offered for adoption; providing humane education; and by working to improve laws to end animal cruelty.

Woodstock Film Festival - Woodstock Film Festival is seeking volunteers that are interested in learning more about the post-production process in the independent film world. Experience what it is like to assist in the organization of a film screening and events showcase through many departments, including but not limited to Press & PR, Production Design, Venue Operations, Technical Development, Transportation, and more!

Worker Justice Center of NY - Worker Justice Center of New York pursues justice for those denied human rights with a focus on agricultural and other low wage workers, through legal representation, community empowerment and advocacy for institutional change.

Yael Adventures - Recruiting for Yael Adventures TBI. We offer free educational tours for young adults nation wide. Experience a trip of a lifetime by creating unforgettable memories and making new friends from all over the globe.

Young Rhinebeck - The Life, Learning, and Language program (LLL) promotes the academic success of a growing number of children in Rhinebeck’s schools whose families do not speak English as their first language. The LLL program also improves communication between the children’s families and the broader school community. Currently, the program serves elementary school-aged children at the Chancellor Livingston School in the Rhinebeck Central School District.
